                                      Aquaculture

Tilapia have been farmed for thousands of years in North Africa.
They are tolerant of a wide variety of water conditions and they reproduce heavily at a young age. That has made them one of the most farmed fish in the world. They do best in tropical conditions of 25 C or more.
Here in Thailand the designation 'ruby' can only be bestowed by His Majesty the King. Acknowledging the potential for the red tilapia to become a valuable food source for the Thai people, His Majesty graciously bestowed upon it the title of 'plah taptim' or ruby fish.  Good Earth farms red tilapia, nile tilapia and catfish.

This is our tilapia grow out pond with the swimming pond in the background.
Trees have been planted and vegetable beds will be dug between them. The effluent water from the fish pond waters and fertilizes the plants.
The waterfall aerating the pond will be replaced soon with an underwater air diffuser.
The swimming pond has plant ledges on two sides and will have a variety of aquatic plants growing in it acting as a biological filter. No need for chemicals!

We have now added a few improvments such as a pump house and a shade net for the swimming pond and an underwater aerator for the grow out pond.
The plants are doing a good job of keeping the swimming pond water clean.

The plants have been doing such a good job
of keeping the pool clean that some of the
fish decided to take up residence there
instead of in the grow out pond. Guess
what's for dinner?

Harvesting the grow out pond is always a
wet and noisy procedure with a lot of
gestulating and shouting of instructions.
